James Thompson – The highs and lows of large scale grass based dairy farming
James is Managing Director of Sansaw Estates which he runs with his wife and business partner Åsa, overseeing 125 residential properties, 50,000 square feet of office space and a 1250-cow spring calving dairy unit. James returned to Sansaw in 2005 after spending seven years serving in the Royal Marines. Sansaw’s dairy was established in 2012 on a greenfield site, with a new team of inexperienced but highly enthusiastic staff. Cow numbers grew from 1050 heifers in 2013 to peak at 1600 cows in 2018. The wheels then fell off and a turbulent three years saw cow numbers reduce, sheds constructed and a succession of managers employed. The presentation will look at the journey Sansaw has taken and highlight some of the lessons learnt.
Members and non-members welcome. A selection of sandwiches, teas and coffees will be available after the meeting.
